Geovia supporting the restoration of the A1 motorway after the collapse of a dike on the Mondego River.

The consecutive storms that hit the country caused the breach of Casais Dike, on February 11, which led to the erosion of the northern abutment with Viaduct C and subsequent collapse of the A1 highway platform at kilometer 191.

It was after this incident that BRISA requested support from Geovia to find a solution to repair the A1 embankment to restore circulation on the country´s main road artery. Geovia defined, together with BRISA and LNEC, the solution to restore circulation in the various phases of opening to road traffic (the 1st phase in the south/north direction on February 23rd and the 2nd phase in the north/south direction on February 27th).

Throughout the study of this solution, Geovia leveraged the multidisciplinary expertise of Norvia Group: LCW provided suport for the structural components, while MSW focused on the river hydraulic component. A joint, dynamic and focused effort that allowed the A1 to open to traffic after just 17 days of repair works.
